What is Limonica Ulti-Mite?

Limonica Ulti-Mite (Amblydromalus limonicus) is the first line of defense against emerging thrips species, including Scirtothrips dorsalis and Thrips parvispinus, as well as the primary whitefly species affecting agricultural crops.

Limonica Ulti-Mite enables growers to establish a much more effective preventative strategy from the earliest stages of the crop cycle and under cooler temperatures, where other predatory mites struggle to establish. This allows growers around the world to stay one step ahead in controlling two of the most challenging pests affecting their crops.

Our Ulti-Mite presentation combines the voracious predation of this natural enemy with a productive miniature biofactory housed inside a patented sachet, ensuring the continuous release of predatory mites for up to four weeks.

What Makes This Beneficial Different?

Limonica Ulti-Mite represents the next generation of biological control for thrips and whiteflies. It is a specialized, voracious, and persistent predatory mite enhanced by patented Ulti-Mite technology. Its ability to establish quickly, reproduce at high rates, and effectively control invasive species such as Thrips parvispinus and Scirtothrips dorsalis enables growers to build stronger, more effective preventative IPM programs.

Combined with a continuous release of predators for up to four weeks, it provides long-lasting protection even under challenging environmental conditions.

  • Cool: Challenging conditions, Confident control

Effective in cool conditions starting at 55°F. Designed for cooler growing conditions, Limonica Ulti-Mite establishes early in the crop cycle and continues working long after release. Its ability to utilize multiple food sources helps maintain stable predator populations for dependable, preventative IPM programs.

  • Voracious: Faster, broader, and longer-lasting protection

Broad-spectrum control of thrips and whitefly larvae. Thanks to its outstanding predation, reproduction, and crop colonization capacity, it quickly establishes active predator populations and provides consistent protection, even under fluctuating environmental conditions and heavy pest pressure.

  • Exclusive: The patented innovation that maximizes performance

Ulti-Mite technology, only from Koppert. The Ulti-Mite sachet combines advanced design with improved moisture retention to support healthy, active mite populations. By maintaining performance across a wide range of greenhouse conditions, it helps deliver consistent biological control throughout the crop cycle.

Ulti-Mite: The Key to a Winning Strategy

Ulti-Mite technology enhances the establishment of A. limonicus by maintaining an active biofactory inside the sachet for up to four weeks. Through the continuous and protected release of predators, it develops more stable populations capable of rapidly colonizing the crop and delivering more consistent preventative protection against thrips and whiteflies.

The Story Behind Limonica Ulti-Mite

What began in 1991 as an experimental collection of a promising predatory mite has become one of the most important innovations in the biological control of thrips and whiteflies.

Limonica Ulti-Mite represents more than 30 years of accumulated knowledge, thousands of hours of research, and a lasting commitment to innovation. Together, they form a legacy that provides growers with a more effective, more reliable solution designed to meet the crop protection challenges of today and tomorrow.

1991: The Discovery of an Extraordinary Predator

The story of Limonica Ulti-Mite began more than three decades ago, when Koppert first collected and experimentally reared Amblydromalus limonicus in 1991.

From its earliest evaluations, this predatory mite demonstrated an exceptional combination of biological traits, including a broad prey range, outstanding predation capacity, rapid reproduction, and excellent performance against thrips and whiteflies.

However, these same characteristics also made it one of the most difficult beneficial organisms to produce on a commercial scale. Its sensitivity to environmental conditions, demanding nutritional requirements, and tendency toward cannibalism created significant production challenges that limited its commercial availability for many years.

2012: Turning Potential into Reality

After more than two decades of research and refinement, Koppert successfully introduced Limonica commercially in 2012.

Although its biological potential was already well established, the greatest challenge remained producing it consistently and in sufficient volumes to meet grower demand.

Over the following years, Koppert's R&D, production, and agronomic development teams continued refining every aspect of its rearing process, from diet and substrate to the design of new production systems.

2023: The Thrips Challenge Evolves

A turning point came in 2023 with the emergence and spread of invasive thrips species, particularly Thrips parvispinus and Scirtothrips spp. This increased the need for more effective biological control solutions.

At the same time, Koppert achieved major technical breakthroughs that dramatically improved the production of A. limonicus, transforming a complex, difficult-to-scale process into a robust and reliable production system.

That same year, Koppert introduced the 12,500-count bottle presentation of Limonica, marking the beginning of a new chapter for this predatory mite.

2025: Limonica Reaches the Next Level

Innovation continued to accelerate.

In 2025, Koppert achieved what had previously seemed impossible by doubling the product concentration and launching a new 25,000-count bottle presentation.

This milestone was the result of years of research and development focused on optimizing production, improving product quality, and making Limonica more accessible to growers around the world.

2026: Where Innovation Meets Nature

In 2026, this journey reached another milestone with the launch of Limonica Ulti-Mite, the first controlled-release sachet containing Amblydromalus limonicus.

Combining this predatory mite with patented Ulti-Mite technology unlocked its full biological potential within a miniature biofactory capable of continuously producing and releasing predators for several weeks.

The result is a solution specifically designed to improve predator establishment, deliver more consistent protection against thrips and whiteflies, and address the evolving challenges of modern agriculture, including increasing pressure from invasive species and increasingly variable climatic conditions.
