Combating food loss and waste: Taking action to transform food systems

Food loss and waste represent pressing challenges within the global food system, perpetuating humanitarian crises, economic strains, and environmental degradation. Shockingly, between 691 and 783 million individuals experienced hunger in 2022 (FAO, 2023).

While food is lost or wasted within every part of the chain, the harm inflicted by pests and diseases upon crops is a significant contributor to this crisis. The FAO estimates that up to 40 percent of global crop production is annually lost to pests, with plant diseases costing the global economy over $220 billion and invasive insects incurring losses exceeding $70 billion.

At Koppert, we are aware of these losses and are increasingly playing a pivotal role in promoting sustainable cultivation practices, reducing harmful substances entering agro-ecosystems, and supporting farmers in increasing the yields and quality of their produce.

Biological crop protection: We champion using biological crop protection products and beneficial microorganisms to naturally control pests. This approach minimizes the need for chemical pesticides, effectively reducing crop losses and guaranteeing the quality of harvested produce.

Enhancing pollination: Pollinators like bees are indispensable for producing numerous crops. Our natural pollination solutions bolster pollination rates, enabling farmers to achieve higher crop yields, thus mitigating the risk of losses due to inadequate pollination.

Strengthening crop health: Our plant health products fortify the natural defenses of crops, rendering them more resilient against diseases and environmental stressors. This proactive approach empowers farmers to prevent crop losses from various factors, including adverse weather conditions and soil-borne pathogens.

Addressing food loss and waste is pivotal in transforming agrifood systems by enhancing food availability, bolstering food security, and fostering healthy diets while building resilience.

On this special occasion of Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day, we remain committed to supporting farmers worldwide and pioneering sustainable solutions to combat these critical issues. Every day, we take action to transform food systems, contributing to a more resilient and prosperous future for all.
